Times are tough for small businesses such as ours and however we are happy for the benefits the lockdown brought to our planet we are also a little worried about the impact of this on our economy.

Here in Kerala where we are located there is a lockdown until 17th of May that is likely to be extended until later date. We still have the capacity to do our design, sales and admin jobs however we cannot operate our production unit under current circumstances.

We hope the situation will improve soon and we’ll be able to bring you beautiful sheets of Malai again!

on the 13th of February 2020 we emerged as winners of Circular Design Challenge as part of Lakme Fashion Week. This is an award run by R.elan and United Nations India evaluating sustainable brands in India.

We presented our collection of accessories made from Malai in 6 looks on the runways and pitched our project to a selected jury.

We loved the experience and we can’t wait to take the next steps!

Apart from the financial reward we ll also get to participate the next Lakme Fashion week and much more!

The time has come for us to move the goals of our production to the next level. We have spent last 2,5 years researching what are the best ways to make Malai and perfecting our craft.

However being located in Kerala also has its challenges. Last years we faced an extremely intense rainy season and floods, this year the rainy season has lasted for over 3 months. It has been incredibly difficult for us to function and produce during times like these.

For the next season we would like to prepare in advance and prepare adequately. And that is why we need your help!

We are launching a crowdfunding campaign on the 15/10/2019 that will last for 45 days on the Czech platform HitHit.com in order to raise funding for buying hydraulic press and sheet dryer.

As rewards we are offering a unique limited edition of accessories made from Malai materials!

Team Malai.

FOOD: Bigger than the Plate falls at a pivotal time where food and our relationship to it are topics of increasing global interest and debate. It features over 70 contemporary projects, new commissions and creative collaborations by artists and designers who are working with chefs, farmers, scientists and local communities. Taking a fresh, experimental and often provocative perspective, these projects will present alternative food futures, from gastronomic experiments to creative interventions in farming, with several exhibits physically growing in the gallery space. They will sit alongside 30 objects from the V&A collections – including influential early food adverts, illustrations and ceramics – providing historical context to the contemporary exhibits.

And we are part of this, how exciting ! Come and visit this exhibition that will be on from 18th of May in London!

The project Alchymisti is loosely inspired by the historical period of the Roman Emperor Rudolf the II who ruled Prague in 16th century. It combines a variety of materials such as golden tubes, Malai biocomposite and Czech crystal glass.
